Key points of care after sterilization surgery
The recovery situation of dogs from sterilization surgery may not be the same for every dog. Generally, male dogs recover much faster than female dogs because the surgery is performed outside the body and does not touch the abdominal cavity. Female dogs will come into contact with intestines and internal organs, but to avoid wound infection, it is very important to keep the wound dry. Do not touch water or take a bath.
In addition, do not let the dog lick the wound, because "licking" will cause the wound to become inflamed, swollen, or even bitten. If this happens, you must take it back to the animal hospital as soon as possible to help it re-sew. The wound on the female dog is very long. It is best for someone to stay with her for the first two or three days and prevent her from licking the wound. Wear something to cover the wound, or wear an "Elizabeth collar."
On the day of the operation, since you need to fast for 12 hours, it is best not to eat immediately after taking it home. The anesthetic has not completely worn off. If you devour it all at once, you will still vomit. During the sterilization operation on a female dog, the abdominal cavity will be moved, and the intestines may even turn out. Therefore, you must wait for the first bowel movement before giving it a normal diet. Before it has a bowel movement, you can only feed it half of the usual amount. To avoid eating too much at once, the intestines will become knotted and inexplicable abdominal pain, so you need to pay special attention.
In fact, during the sterilization operation, the dog will bleed no more than 2 milliliters of blood, and no special nutritional supplements are needed. After the operation, it takes 7 to 10 days for the wound to recover. The animal doctor will prescribe oral anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs to the dog, and then take it back to the animal hospital to check whether the stitches can be removed. When the dog recovers well and the stitches are removed, you can take a bath and everything will be OK.
