A dog looking sideways at its owner does not actually have much real meaning. It is more of just observing the owner, or looking at the owner in a daze. However, in different situations, the meaning of a dog squinting is also different. For example, if the dog squints at its owner when it makes a mistake, the dog may feel ashamed. If the owner is squinting while teaching it, it is more of an expression of fatigue and boredom, similar to a child who is tired of hearing an adult's nagging. If the dog appears in the owner's sight and looks sideways at the owner when the owner is busy, then it is likely that the dog wants the owner to play with him, but sees that the owner is busy, so he starts to observe and wait for the owner.
