A high-quality Shar Pei usually has a square shape, a head shaped a bit like a hippopotamus, a mouth like a tile tube, triangular eyes, and a typical bluish-blue tongue coating. When it was young, its fur was full of wrinkles, which is of course the main reason why it is called a Shar-Pei.
The standard appearance of the Shar-Pei is a short back, a head that appears larger than the body, the more wrinkles on the face when young, the better, small and drooping ears, and short, hard hair on the body. The Shar-Pei's expression is always full of melancholy and sorrow, but its character is very cheerful and lively.
To distinguish between real and fake Shar-Pei, parents can pull the folds on the dog’s body with their hands. The purebred high-quality Shar-Pei's fur is soft and deeply wrinkled. When the owner pulls, the fur can be pulled up without the dog feeling pain. If it is an artificial Shar-Pei, its folds will be shallow, and when the folds are pulled, the dog will feel obvious pain.
In addition, it should be noted that although the hair on the body of a truly high-quality Shar-Pei is short and hard, it feels smooth to the touch, and it will not feel obstructive when touched against the hair. The hair of fake Shar-Pei dogs is mostly shaved with a razor. When touched, it will feel rough and hard, and the texture of the fur is not smooth.
