Be aware of the people you live with
You should first get to know the people or creatures you live with. If you have a roommate or family member who is allergic to dogs, or they don't like dogs, or just don't want to keep them, you need to find a way to deal with this problem. Likewise, if you have other pets that don't get along well with dogs, you need to consider that you may find that owning a dog is not possible for you.
Choose the right size
Once you have decided that you are likely to get a dog, you need to first decide what size of dog is best for you. If you only have a small amount of space, you don’t want to get a very large dog. Even if dogs are allowed in many apartments, they will set limits on the size of the dogs. However, if you live in a very open area (especially one with a lot of wild creatures) or you need a dog to keep you safe, you'll want to consider a larger dog.
