1. Take a bath regularly
The most direct way to solve body odor is to take a shower. Especially for those golden retrievers with skin diseases or unclean fur. However, bathing is also taboo. It is best to use pet-specific shower gel, and be sure to blow dry after washing, otherwise the dog will easily catch a cold. At the same time, don’t bathe every day. Frequent bathing will wash away the dog’s skin protective film and lose its protective effect. It is best to wash once every seven to ten days in summer and once every half month to a month in winter.
2. Clean the mouth
The stink in the mouth of golden retrievers is due to long-term uncleanness. Occasionally, residues of food eaten by dogs remain in the gaps between the teeth, which makes the mouth smell heavier. In severe cases, the teeth can become loose and fall off. Dogs’ teeth are the same as those of humans. They need to be cleaned and brushed regularly, or you can feed your dog some big bones and teething snacks to help clean their teeth.
3. Clean ears
Part of the smell of golden retrievers comes from their ears, because the hair of golden retrievers is thicker than that of other dogs. The ears of golden retrievers are prone to parasites and mites or inflammation, causing itching and smelly ears. If they are not cleaned for a long time, the ears will become inflamed and smelly, which can be serious. You can also get ear mites. Therefore, you need to regularly clean earwax and pluck ear hairs, and you can also use ear cleaners.
4. Clean anal glands
One of the key points of golden retriever dog's anal body odor is that the dog's odor mainly comes from the glands on both sides of the anus, and the anal glands can have the function of identifying one's identity. Dogs will sniff each other's butts when they meet, but if they are not cleaned for a long time, the anal gland fluid will accumulate and become blocked, causing inflammation and stinking. It will be better if the owner removes the secretions from the dog's glands.
